About the Author
Ethan is the son of a farmer and nurse who was later adopted by artists. Ethan writes towards a peaceful world with a sharp and unique perspective, always following George Orwell's six rules for writing, mainly #6, "Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous." Ethan proudly dropped out of high school, though he later admittedly graduated. He later dropped out of college and the proverbial rat race, moving to the mountains to pursue snowboarding. This led him to pursue tai chi chuan, yoga and meditation. Being a dropout Ethan has been able to honestly observe and present his observations and his many articles have appeared on leading news websites with global audiences as well as several magazines. Ethan's neophyte work is The Complete Patriot's Guide to Oligarchical Collectivism, published by Progressive Press. In it he explores history, philosophy and activism through an Orwellian lens.

A must read for understanding the new world order

Many readers will undoubtedly recognize the homage paid to George Orwell's Nineteen
Eighty-Four evident in the title of The Complete Patriot's Guide to Oligarchical Collectivism: Its
Theory and Practice by Ethan. However, for any of those still unfamiliar with Orwell's seminal
masterpiece, this volume stands firmly on its own as an accurate and comprehensive treatise on
the past, present and future status of global human politics.
Within this debut literary work Ethan reveals the machinations of societal control that
do not simply permeate but, in fact, define the world in which we live. Ethan painstakingly
researches and reduces centuries of historical data into a simple template which provides
the reader with a way to understand how each or our individual thought processes fit into the
complex fabric of our sociopolitical existence.
The Complete Patriots Guide to Oligarchical Collectivism: Its Theory and Practice
employs a vast array of source material, coupled with a unique insight to break down the human

Outside the Box Thinking

From time to time, I find a book that opens the way I think about the world. This is one such book, and one that I'm very glad I came across. The contents are pretty wide ranging, from the world order and controlling forces around the world through history to larger philosophical issues. For me, many of these things were not new. The selling point of the book for me lies in the fresh look it brings to these problems and the recommendations it gives on how we can bring some change. It is a practical book, informed by a creative spirit and countless priceless nuggets of wisdom. I've given it to friends and recommended to others.

At times humorous, tense, and tragic, these stories often focus on the elusive search for connection and understanding, visiting characters at key moments of consciousness or detachment. Seized by compulsion or repression, many in this work disengage from life by assuming familiar roles or patterns. In "The Stout of Heart," a man obsessed with horse breeding locks himself in his room annually to study catalogues, shutting out his family, while in "An Unfair Question," another man's frustration with his role as husband and father surfaces when he engages a party guest in friendly conversation and ends up holding her at gunpoint. These stories achieve an understated impact due in part to Shepard's knack for acute dialogue and descriptions that reveal his dramatist's eye for sparse but evocative detail. In "Living the Sign," a handmade sign in a fast food restaurant inspires a man to self-awareness, though he finds that its teenage creator is only dimly aware of its significance. "The Remedy Man," the collection's first and strongest story, tells of a guarded boy who comes to realize his potential by helping E.V., the road-worn title character (a fixer of bad horses), break a stallion. "Horse is just like a human being," E.V. tells him. "He's just gotta know his limits. Once he finds that out he's a happy camper." "E.V. made no bones about it; he was not a horse whisperer by any stretch," writes Shepard (Cruising Paradise, etc.) in the first of 18 brief stories that make up his new collection. "He could fix bad horses, and when he fixed them they stayed fixed." This terse, weather-beaten "remedy man" turns out to be so observant that he gives a bullied boy a new sense of the truly vast scale of life and of his own possibilities. Some of the tales explore how characters fail to connect with any greater vision. Ambushed by sex, buried in habit or gripped by a desperation they didn't know they possessed, they become like blind forces of nature, some of them terrifying and heartbreaking. At his best, Shepard shows us how in brief, bright moments people wake up from the suck and drag of the distractions that cloud their lives. In "Living the Sign" a young fast-food worker commemorates his moment of lucidity by posting a sign that reads, "`Life is what's happening to you while you're making plans for something else.'" Shepard shows that consciousness calls out to us: eager to track down the employee who made the sign, a patron asks if anyone there seems "particularly auspicious? Particularly present and attentive?" In classic Shepard style, he also shows in the title story how people can fall apart as quickly and with just as much force as they come together. Like "The Remedy Man" himself, these sketches are simple but deeply intuitive and true.

In These Slim Pages.....................

Shepard, the well-known playwright and actor, has written eighteen brief stories that are filled with unforgettable images. They deal with the unexpected reactions of human nature, especially sex and the yearnings for things that no longer exist. Shepard is at his best with these stories as he clearly and effortless describes the sorrows, joys, and fallibility of everyday life.

I enjoyed all of Shepard�s stories in his second collection of fiction. It would be hard to choose any one favorite, but �Blinking Eye� is one I will never forget. It will leave an unforgettable image on your mind. It is about a young girl driving cross-country bearing an urn containing her mother�s ashes when she encounters an injured hawk on the side of the road. She decides to take the injured hawk to a veterinarian for help. What happens after she places the hawk in her car will definitely leave a vivid image in your mind forever.
Shepard�s gift of writing is effortless to read for he brings all of his stories to life in a clear, concise, and beautifully detailed matter. This is a book not to be missed!!

Sam's way . . .

Fans of playwright Sam Shepard will enjoy this collection of short pieces, many of them not more than monologues or brief sketches of dialogue. Sometimes the blanks are filled in and we get an actual short story, as in the title story, about two elderly men who compete for the attention of a waitress at Denny's. Also, "An Unfair Question," in which an over-inquisitive party guest interested in guns is taken to the basement by her host, who becomes dangerously impatient with her.

Others tend toward a Mamet-like fascination with the way people talk who have little to say and don't listen to each other. In "Living the Sign," a fast-food customer tries unsuccessfuly to strike up a conversation with the young employees about a thoughtful message hung over the chicken wings. A father and his two school-age children, in "Berlin Wall Piece," struggles without much success - or gratitude - to help his son with a homework assignment. Two telephone conversations comprise the extent of "Coalinga 1/2 Way," in which one person attempts vainly to keep the other person from walking out of a relationship. Four voice mail messages comprise another, as a shady character reports to a client on the fate of an injured race horse in "Tinnitus."

Two personal favorites are "The Remedy Man," about a man who breaks a willful horse, as well as the tyrannical hold of a father over his son, and the monologue "The Company's Interest," in which a lone night-shift filling station attendant is confronted by two long haired, tatooed and much overweight customers.

Mostly set in the West, many in California, this collection of stories shows flashes of mercurial creative intelligence sending off sparks of story fragments - characters, situations, dialogue, each elusive and elliptical, verbal fireworks against a night sky, your imagination filled with evocative afterimages. BTW, the cover photo is by Jessica Lange.

Excellent Collection of Short Stories Full of Actual Humans on the Brink

"Life is what's happening to you while you're making plans for something else." That one sentence from "Living the Sign", sums up this entire collection of simple stories that really hit the nail on the head. The story itself is a metaphor for the collection: The sentence is posted on a sign in a fast food joint by one of its employees, and the sign prompts one customer to begin a mini journey of discovery to find the one prescient individual among the glassy-eyed help behind the counter.

In "The Remedy Man" we get a simple take on the proverbial Horse Whisperer (though E.V., the title character wouldn't classify himself as such - hence the title - he fixes things). But, is this the story of E.V. fixing a horse, or that of him helping a young boy find his own strength and way under the thumb of his controlling father?

The characters in these stories, whether a man unable to grasp his role as father and husband who takes another partygoer hostage at gun point or so obsessed with horse breeding that he locks himself away from his family annually to study catalogs, are either at moments of absolute clarity or complete detachment from life. And, Shepard's sharp, concise dialog and writing snaps right to the point every time.

The qualities of mind -
To be one thing and not to change is the climax of STILLNESS. To have nothing in one that resists is the climax of EMPTINESS. To remain detached from all outside things is the climax of FINENESS. To have in oneself no contraries is the climax of PURITY.

You are the commander of your mind -
I've always been buffeted by circumstances because I thought of myself as a human being [affected by] outside conditioning. Now I realize that I am the power that commands the feeling of my mind and from which circumstances grow.

To free the mind -
In order that the mind may function naturally and harmoniously it must be freed from all attachment to oppositional notions. The mind should be freed from the influence of the external world. To let the mind take its course unhindered among phenomena. Not the cultivated innocence of a clever mind that wants to be innocent, but that state of innocence in which there is no denial or acceptance, and in which the mind just sees what is.

A new side to a well known man

Before finding this book I was unaware of Bruce Lee's work in Philosophy. I am a Phil major myself, and I found the balance of western and eastern thought refreshing. A lot of Philosophy is grouped in long wordy essays that make it somewhat a stratified ivory tower type of field. Lee's book is organzied in easy to read, simple koans, proverbs and sayings.
To one who has read a great deal of Buddhism, Pyschology, or Eastern thought, they may read a lot of what they may have already read. But this book doesn't disappoint, there are some quality nuggets in here. Bruce says much in few words, his eloquence can be stunning & profound.
Although I'm not really into martial arts or anything like that I always revered him in a certain light, in fitness, command, and eloquence.
Worth a read, I have new respect for Bruce Lee.

Bruce Lee's Greatest Work!

This book could easily have been retitlted "Bruce Lee Speaks To Everyone" for there is something of great worth for anyone who takes the time to pick up this book. My sister, who doesn't care a whit for fighting, picked up this book and has now purchased her own copy to carry with her to school. Bruce Lee's philosophy, which is more like deep yet practical insights into life is magnificent. Topics covered range from relationships, racism, love, parenting, dealing with adversity, money, business and motivation, to the more profound topics such as life, death and spirituality. This is by far the greatest Bruce Lee book I've ever read and something I will refer to again and again.

While most people may be attracted to Bruce Lee because of his movies or the legend he left behind, I'm more impressed by his courage and compassion. John Little did a great job editing this treasure. I'd recommend it to any man that I thought needed a boost in confidence and direction.

Not as good as Burke's other handbooks

Peter Burke has written a series of handbooks about academic and historiographical trends on over the years, including his 'Sociology and History' and 'What Is Cultural History?'. Each of these books is a grab-bag, but Burke generally managed to combine knowledge from his historical specialization (Renaissance and Early Modern Europe) with an introduction to the trend, while making some incisive comments along the way. This book is significantly weaker than his other books, however.

Where Burke's earlier books reflected a mature, thoughtful engagement with the issues at hand, Burke here seems unwilling or unable to go beyond reporting the findings of earlier scholars and critics. Where his books on cultural history and sociology at times raised meaningful questions about how and by whom cultural and sociological processes were occurring-- and what the scholarly terminology really implies-- Burke here generally seems content with vague formulations about cultural interactions that just seem to happen. Where his other handbooks were helpful guides for both classic works and current scholarship, Burke's bibliography here seems thin, and he seems less assured when discussing important figures. He leans fairly heavily on Gilberto Freyre, for example, without really engaging other major scholars of hybridity like Bhabha and Spivak. His use of Early Modern history is less revealing than in his earlier books. More critically, Burke wants to see linguistics and linguistic terminology as offering a helpful way out of the thicket of terminology for hybridity and cultural interaction. There may be something to this, but Burke seems to have a rather hazy knowledge of linguistics. Drawing on a 50-year old article, for example, he makes an unclear, probably incorrect distinction between bilingualism and diglossia on p. 111.

Perhaps I have overreacted by finding so many faults in what is a slight work (it can be easily read in an afternoon). And the book does improve a bit towards the end. All the same, with so much scholarly attention to hybridity and post-colonialism in recent years, there are better introductions to the subject out there. Start somewhere else.

About the Author

Jim Burtles, KLJ, MMLJ, FBCI, is a highly regarded global leader and practitioner in the Business Continuity profession with over 35 years of experience spread across 24 countries. He is also the author of Principles and Practice of Business Continuity: Tools and Techniques and is working on a Second Edition due for publication in early 2015.
Burtles was one of founders of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and in 2001 his peers presented him with BCI's Lifetime Achievement Award. In his work as BCI's Standards Officer, Burtles was heavily involved in the evolution of its professional standards and ethics. As an honorary fellow he now serves on the Global Membership Council representing the interests of the worldwide membership.
He received the Freedom of the City of London in 1992. In 2005 was granted the rank of a Knight of Grace in the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, an ancient charitable body concerned with the treatment of skin diseases.
Burtles' first involvement with disaster recovery was in 1974 as a field engineer responsible for repairing and recovering a critical banking system struck by lightning. He went on to become IBM's disaster recovery country specialist before joining a disaster recovery service as their principal emergency management consultant in 1987.
In 2001 he set out on his own as the principal of Total Continuity Management, where he now focuses on executive level training and the development of specialist emergency response skills.
Throughout all these years he tended to specialize in serving the personal needs of those involved in emergency situations. He trained and served as a trauma counselor before developing a counseling technique aimed at helping the victims of disaster-related trauma. This was published in 1998 as A Counselor s Guide to the Restabilization Process. His practical experience includes hands-on recovery work with victims of such violent events as riots, bombings, earthquakes, storms, and fires. This includes technical assistance and support in 90-odd disasters, as well as advice and guidance for clients in over 200 emergency situations.
Through his activities as a trainer and consultant, he has helped to introduce the personal aspects of business continuity, emergency planning, and related disciplines into both the public and private sectors.

Business Continuity Planning at its best!

This book should be a staple in your library if you are responsible for business continuity and DR planning at your company. I was new to the field so I really appreciated how the book was layed out and how easy it was to transfer the information to my plan. There are a lot of applicable practices, tools, cheatsheets, etc that you can easily incorporate into your plan. I was very pleased with this book.

Jim Burtles is one of the business continuity professionals I most admire because of his long-standing commitment to the business continuity industry, and his extensive contributions to the profession over his broad career.

So, as a publisher (and as publisher of this book) I was thrilled when I first saw Jim's manuscript. There are not many people who could have written this book - and far fewer who could have written it nearly as well.

This book is an ideal combination of the practice of business continuity - standards, best practices, global perspective - and, the process of business continuity - planning, development, implementation, and so forth. Jim presents a clear picture of not just how to do what needs to be done, but why. By striking a balance between theory and practice, I believe Jim's approach makes the reader's job much easier and more effective.

There are other books on business continuity - I have edited or published many of them - but Jim Burtles' book is my favorite. With the included CD-ROM containing extensive tools and resources, this book is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to understand business continuity management, is about to embark on implementing a business continuity program, or is looking to bring an existing business continuity program up to world-class best practice.
