Emperor and Aristocracy in Heian Japan: 10th and 11th centuries, by Francine Herail

The Japanese court at the apogee of the Heian period gives us an insight into a society that produced one of the finest artistic and literary flowerings in Japan's history. Unlike the heads of the great European courts, the emperor, a quasi-divine figure, could take no initiative. Real authority was in the hands of the chancellor assisted by a council of senior nobles. Imbued with the notion that the welfare of the country depended on the emperor and his advisors, they sought the assistance of divine powers. Thus they devoted three-quarters of their working lives to ensuring the correct performance of the annual cycle of celebrations, rituals deemed essential for the prosperity and safety of the country. Ceremonies, an art of living enamoured of harmony and refinement, but also secular and religious power struggles, the place of women, literati and artists, the role of provincial governors... Francine Herail shows us what life was like in the inner palace of Heiankyo and beyond its confines, and helps us to understand the values of a Japanese society, which, in spite of continental influences, has never lost sight of its originality.

Rendering with Radiance Greg Ward Larson and Rob Shakespeare ISBN 1-55860-499-5, Hard Cover 664 pages; 1998; Morgan Kaufmann Publishers
Many LD+A readers know Radiance as a lighting design and analysis program that was developed by Greg Ward (Larson) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Those who have investigated Radiance know that it is freely available, but usable only if you have a UNIX workstation and the patience to master more than 50 software tools. In ten years, it has attracted a coterie of fewer than 400 dedicated users.
Rendering with Radiance will undoubtedly change this. Originally conceived as a UNIX-style technical manual, the book is much more. It offers several tutorials, numerous application examples, and detailed discussions of the program's underlying mathematical algorithms. The accompanying CD-ROM includes example images, Radiance models and material libraries, reference manuals, and fully commented C source code for Radiance 3.1.
Despite first impressions, this book is not about computer graphics. The Radiance Lighting Simulation and Rendering System was created for advanced lighting designers and academic researchers, and more than half of the book is devoted to applying Radiance to real-world lighting problems. Ward Larson, Shakespeare and three contributing experts discuss luminaire modeling and lighting analysis, daylight simulation, animation, roadway lighting, theatre lighting, and exterior lighting. Even if you have committed yourself to using architectural visualization programs such as Lightscape and RadioRay, you will find an abundance of useful information in this book.
Radiance is the only software program that faithfully models the physical behavior of light, especially specular and semispecular reflections. It has a steep learning curve, but the quality of the architectural renderings it produces is unequalled by any commercial product. With Rendering with Radiance, we now have a user's manual that fully complements the capabilities of its namesake.
This truly is a remarkable book. Unlike most computer graphics texts, it presents lengthy discussions of IES photometric data files, luminance meters and spectrophotometers, the CIE overcast sky model, roadway light metrics, veiling luminance, spectral transmission data, and much more. The major algorithms used by Radiance are fully documented, including discussions of their limitations. There is more information in this book on lighting software use and design than can be found in all other books combined.
The major disadvantage of Radiance is that it was developed for UNIX workstations. In the past, this restricted the use of the program (really a set of UNIX tools) mostly to academic researchers. However, the freely-available and popular UNIX clone Linux now allows Radiance to be run with few difficulties on Windows and Macintosh computers.

Rendering with Radiance is for everyone
By chas@innernet.com
As a contributor to the text, I am a bit biased, but I do think you will find the book's numerous chapters very helpful for folks of a wide range of skill levels. It is a great resource guide, reference book and tutorial. It includes the Radiance executables for a few Unix platforms on the CD-ROM! These alone will save you an hour or two. The book is well worth the money, but don't take my word for it.

Revised Edition now available
By Charles K. Ehrlich
Back by popular demand, Rendering with Radiance, Revised Edition is now available at a lower price. The authors have retained the publishing rights from Morgan Kaufman and are now self-publishing the book. It should be available through Amazon.com and others shortly. The new ISBN is 0-9745381-0-8. The revised edition corrects some typos, and eliminates the color plates and CD-ROM.

For a grandchild
By Gma 38059
My granddaughter loves horses & she was struggling with reading starting into the 1st grade. I got this for her on the Kindle Fire to encourage her to start reading for pleasure - not just because she has to. With the work the school put in with her and books like this about topics she really likes, she has now excelled in reading! Another plus are the values/morales these books teach - the children are presented with a situation where there is a right & a wrong... it follows their decisions in dealing with those situations & the final outcome based on those decisions well.

Pony Scouts: The Trail Ride
By BabyMo
One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.

The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.

In The Trail Ride, Jill and Meg and Annie are having a riding lesson. Their mother is distracted by the arrival of the farrier, and instructs them not to trot. Meg says that they are ready to go on a trail ride because they can steer their ponies around the cones set up in the ring. The other girls are reluctant, but they go along with Meg’s idea. On the trail ride, they get lost but the ponies know how to get home. Jill’s mother is not happy; the girls point out that they didn’t trot, but Jill’s mother says that they are too young to go on a trail ride without an adult. The girls accept responsibility for their actions and promise not to do it again.

I really liked this installment of the series. The girls demonstrate that they are good friends, and they don’t let Meg take the blame for leaving the ring, and they say that they all made the decision and that Pony Scouts stick together. I liked the message that it isn’t okay to disobey instructions, to accept responsibility for disobeying, and to stick together with friends.

I also liked that this story introduces children to some more horse related terminology. The farrier only plays an indirect role in the story, but it was informative to learn a new term.

I would recommend Pony Scouts: The Trail Ride. This book is written at a second grade reading level and will appeal to children from kindergarten to second grade.

Adorable book, particularly for horse lovers
By Saucy and Bossy
I absolutely love all the books in the Pony Scouts series. Story lines and illustrations are very cute. Plus, as a former "barn rat" I love that they use a lot of horse-world terms and even have a glossary page in the back of each book. My daughter is only 2 but loves hearing these stories and has already picked up several barn terms... For example she now says she is putting the "tack" on her toy ponies when she pretends to put on their saddles. Too cute.

From Publishers Weekly
April Kyle, the damsel in distress that Spenser rescued in two earlier books, Ceremony (1982) and Taming a Sea Horse (1986), again turns to the iconic Boston PI for help in the 34th entry in Parker's popular series. Cynical yet romantic, Spenser easily handles the immediate threat of some men trying to muscle in on the high-class Boston whorehouse April is running. Unfortunately, that isn't the real problem, and Spenser without much surprise finds that April, the thugs and everyone else involved is lying to him. Instead of walking away, Spenser continues to probe, following trails that lead to New York, a con artist, mob connections and other complications. This is vintage Parker, with Spenser exchanging witty dialogue with the faithful Hawk, sexy dialogue with his beloved Susan and smart-alecky dialogue with cops and villains. The old pros can make it look easy, and that goes for both the author and his hero as they deliver the goods smoothly and with inimitable style. (Oct.)

From Booklist
April Kyle is the young runaway Spenser rescued from Boston's notorious Combat Zone in 1982's Ceremony. Bereft of conventional options, he left her in the care of Patricia Utley, operator of an upscale New York bordello. Now she is back in Boston operating a branch office for Utley and needs Spenserian assistance. Some locals are trying to move in on her operation. Perhaps Spenser and Hawk can dissuade them? They make quick work of the muscle but learn the catalyst for the takeover may have a more complex motive. April knows more than she has revealed to him about the source of the threat and her complicity. Spenser's frustration with Kyle's dishonesty and his avuncular need to help forces him to keep digging. The latest entry in the long-running series finds Parker revisiting familiar themes such as the often-deleterious effect that families have on their members and whether the damage can ever be truly undone. The banter between Spenser and his significant other, Susan Silverman, and the imperturbable Hawk--typically a highlight of the series--seems flat here, even veering toward cliche. Still, no Spenser novel fails to be entertaining, but Parker just may be doing better work these days with his two other series characters, Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone. Here's hoping he gets the big guy back on track. Wes Lukowsky

It's a Comfortable Long Term Relationship
By Lisa Shea
Spenser is really a series that you have to read from the beginning if you want to understand what is going on. Hundred-Dollar Baby is no exception. April Kyle, the lead character from Ceremony and Taming a Sea Horse, is back again - now running her own whorehouse in Boston. Unfortunately, someone's trying to take a cut of her profits, and she doesn't want any "men" interfering with her female-only business.

This is "comfort zone" for Spenser - many of his cases have involved feminists who insist they want to do things with women only, and end up relying on Spenser for help. There's not even any preamble in this one - April's in his office from moment one of the story, needing Spenser to rescue her from trouble. And while she claims she doesn't really need any man-help, it turns out her entire plan for life was laid out by a man and she had a male bouncer keeping her safe.

Of course, as is traditional, things get messy quickly, Spenser has no idea what's going on, so he randomly follows people to see what happens. He stirs up some hornets nests. Susan and he talk dirty and have a sex life that's rather active for someone who, according to stated birthdates, has just turned 70. But we suspend disbelief and understand that even though he was 37 in 1973, he hasn't quite aged "normally" since then.

The key here is that if you've read the series all along, when just like long-term married couples, you are extremely familiar with the people and situations. You know Teddy Sapp, Patricia Utley, Hawk, and other people who move in and out of the story - you know their ups, downs, quirks, loves. It's like when an older couple has a conversation along the lines of "Remember that time in Paris?" "I loved the whipped cream". They don't need to say any more, they both know the whole story and meaning and why it's relevant to the current situation. The same is true here - you know that Susan's look is palpable, you've heard that 20 times. You know Hawk can easily switch between high English and low po-boy talk.

So you don't read Spenser books for shocking gore or Philip K Dick like twists. You often can outguess what is going to happen. If anything, Hundred-Dollar Baby is more comfy than several previous ones. No front-page topics here, just another whore story where Spenser tries to give them a hand, defeating thugs who try to take him in, and talking with various underworld types. No new Russian mob, no terrorists, no new characters at all, really. No new locations - you stick right around Boston and a little of New York.

Interestingly, depending on your point of view, this can be good or bad. I really liked this book a lot - I thought it had a different ending than most Spenser books tend to, and it didn't do the "bring in 20 characters for a hoe-down" which had been done several times in the past. The few characters brought in were important to the story. I appreciated that he didn't re-hash items (like the Palpable Susan Eyes) that often get mentioned in every single book.

On the other hand, my boyfriend, who's also an avid Spenser fan and has read all the books, seen all the tv-movies etc., felt there was little going on here. It's more of a short story of "What happened to April" with little development, character, or plot. He felt the storyline was so broadcasted that you could sort of read along in your sleep, since you knew pretty much what each character would do and say.

So there you go. If you're looking for a cutting edge, new story with intricate characters and 24-alive plotlines, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're looking to pick up your first Parker book, I wouldn't start here. It'd be like walking into a 40th wedding anniversary without knowing anyone and missing out on all the in-jokes and story backgrounds. But if you've been reading Spenser all along - or are willing to spend a few weeks catching yourself up on the storyline, this really is a nice continuation. It's a closing out of a story we spent a lot of time with, and it adds a little more depth to Spenser's character.

As usual a great read

This author seems to never disappoint. His banter with Hawk and Suzanne is as sharp as usual. A fun read!!

Classic Spenser
By E. Matsuoka
A Spenser novel is as wonderfully dependable and mildly disappointing as a Nero Wolfe novel. Both offer characters with codes of conduct that are stronger than but often different from any codes of law, and both give most of their pleasure from the interaction of the two leads, with plots serving mostly to allow for variations on these interactions. The disappointment comes because the ends are always somewhat sudden, never lingering and giving the reader a chance to absorb the end in the company of friends.

From Publishers Weekly
When a spoiled Little Wolf pooh-poohs his Lamburger and Sloppy Doe dinner, Father Wolf dreamily recalls a true delicacy. There was a time when a clever wolf could snatch a shepherd boy off a hill, he muses, leaning back in his overstuffed easy chair. Why, there was nothing better than a steaming plate of Boy Chops... and some Boys-n-Berry Pie. He and Mother Wolf promise to cook the first boy their finicky son can find. Thereafter, Little Wolf teases his nostalgic parents by yelling, Boy! Boy! for kicks. By the time Little Wolf spies a dozen plump Scouts hiking through the forest, his folks don't believe him anymore. Hartman (Bible Bad Guys) names many storybook meals, including Three-Pig Salad (with bricks, straw and sticks) and Granny Smith Pie, but never explains why boys are such an elusive quarry. Raglin (The Thirteen Days of Halloween) pictures the wolves as rustic homebodies in old-fashioned clothes, and Little Wolf as a prankster in short pants. His fine-line pen-and-ink illustrations, which have the dense crosshatching of woodcuts, seem immobile despite the keyed-up activity. This glib reversal of The Boy Who Cried Wolf has its slapstick moments, but can't top Jan Fearnley's Mr. Wolf books for sinister hijinks. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-In this fractured Aesop's fable, Little Wolf longs for "boy" for supper rather than his mother's usual fare: Lamburgers, Sloppy Does, and Muskratatouille. When his parents promise that if a boy shows up, they'll track him down and cook him, Little Wolf puts it to the test right away by calling, "Boy!" which achieves the desired result of ruining dinner two nights in a row. His parents catch on and decide to ignore their son just as a pack of Boy Scouts shows up, with one even invading the den, much to Little Wolf's despair. Hartman's spare storytelling style is enhanced by Raglin's textured pen and colored-ink illustrations that are packed with nifty details: Little Wolf's high-tops, the wolf emblem on the scouts' flag, and the decor of the wolf den. A fun twist on a traditional tale.

*Starred Review* Reviewed with Gail Carson Levine's Betsy Who Cried Wolf!

PreS.-Gr. 2. Two funny turns on a familiar tale: Hartman's twists species; Levine's twists gender.

In The Wolf Who Cried Boy, Little Wolf wishes for something besides lamburgers and sloppy does for dinner. Actually, he'd prefer boy. Father agrees that if Little Wolf finds one, he can eat it. So the next day, to avoid another boring dinner, Little Wolf screams, "Boy!" His parents run, sniff, and search, but don't find a boy. Little Wolf thinks that's so funny, he pulls the same trick again, and his parents catch on. When Little Wolf sees a troop of boy scouts, he can't believe his eyes. Of course, his parents don't believe him--even when a scout makes himself at home on the wolves' couch. Unlike fractured fairy tales that rely simply on premise, this one finds humor in the details, in both the story (Granny Smith pie featuring a "hard, crusty" granny) and the art (the mischievous scout, emboldened by the wolves' disbelief). Raglin's sturdy pen-and-ink pictures, which soar above their cartoon styling, are electric with fun.

In Betsy, the illustrations are also more than simply amusing. Nash uses balloon captions for his sheep to express their thoughts about Betsy, the new eight-year-old shepherd. Betsy is determined to be the best shepherd ever, but Zimmo the wolf has another plan. Betsy spots Zimmo, who has all the characteristics on the wolf checklist, but he disappears when the grown-ups show up to check him out. The next time that happens, Betsy is sent back to shepherd school. The third time, Betsy deals with him herself and makes him a friend with her shepherd pies. The pacing slows a bit at the end, but there are some laugh-aloud moments and children will identify with the feisty, young shepherd. There's a glow and a flow to the pictures that add shine to the story. Ilene Cooper

Cute
By Amazon Customer
This is a cute story about a small wolf who hates his mother's cooking: lamb burgers, sloppy does, and chocolate moose. What the wolf really wants to eat is a boy. To avoid his mother's cooking one night, he tries the ploy of shouting "boy". It works- -his parents run out of the den in search of the boy and dinner is ruined. Of course, when a real boy actually appears in the neighborhood, the small wolf can't get a rise out of his parents, so he has to learn to eat lamb burgers after all. Some kids might find the book a bit scary, but for those who can handle the tension, it's a fun story. The book has about 1200 words.

You'll wolf it down!
By A Customer
My daughter and I were lucky enough to discover this on the "new books" shelf at a local library, and it quickly became a favorite... a great twist on the original fable, combined with a hilarious fussy-eater subplot. We had to buy our own copy. The wordplay is delightful ("chipmunks and dip," "muskratatouille"), and the cheerfully sick sense of humor ("there was nothing better than a steaming plate of Boy Chops, a big Baked Boy-tato, and some Boys-n-Berry Pie") is exactly what kids love. The illustrations have a quaint, old-fashioned cartoon aspect which perfectly suits the story. I did think the ending was a bit quick and pat for such a rollicking and imaginative tale, but it seems ungracious to note even a minor flaw in a book that's so much fun.

Entertaining, refreshing presentation of the famous fable
By Primadogga
Writing is excellent and witty - one simply can't resist falling in love with a book that includes menu items such as "lamburgers" and "Granny Smith pie" - and the illustrations support it well. Better done than the run of the mill fairy tale parody, and thus far superior to the average fairy tale presentation.

The humor is invaluable when trying to stuff a moral down kids' throats - they respond relatively well to being reminded that they are crying "Boy!" (especially when presented comically) - and it also helps them relax and back away from the precipitating issue.

AND - it's a lot of fun to read aloud, especially if one hams up the voices. Highly recommended for (parents of) bright, lively kids, ages 3 and up.
