If you're at all interested in fashion drawing, this is a fantastic book.

Saw this at a local bookshop in their new section and thought it was awesome; until I saw the $60 price tag it had. I just couldn't justify it. I decided to look it up on Amazon to see their prices and boy was I excited when I saw how much lower it was. I actually ordered it when the price was down to $11 so I got it for a total steal. It's very informative and I love all the references. If you're at all interested in fashion drawing or even just references for some ideas, this is a fantastic book.

An intellectual, but illuminating, read.

I have just finished reading Laura Mark's new book--Enfoldment and Infinity--comparing Islamic art and contemporary media art. Laura is fascinated with the fractal geometry and the way that art (and life) unfolds as one examines on overall picture at closer and closer levels, unfolding the art to reveal hidden mysteries and connections to life forces and the divine. The book is lyrical and a delight to read, drawing parallels between Islamic art and new media art that are poetic and illuminating. Not having any background with philosophy, theology, art history, Islamic culture or new media art forms, beyond having a modicum of familiarity with current cultural icons such as "The Matrix" movie trilogy, the video games "Spore," genetic algorithms, and having bludgeoned my way through the first half of the Quran--it is NOT a light read. Laura assumes considerable knowledge of art history, philosophy and Islamic arts. However, in spite of being drenched in ignorance, I found the book fascinating and I will never look at Islamic or new media art in the same way again. Anyone with an interest in art theory, fractal geometries, algorithmic art forms, Islamic culture, and/or philosophy and who is willing to keep THINKING throughout the chapters will enjoy this work.

A story of overcoming obstacles and following your dreams...

Don't let the title throw you, this book is a story about overcoming obstacles and following your dreams. I read this book with my seven year old granddaughter and we enjoyed reading about Claudia, a brave young woman who left her family in Mexico to travel to Texas to find a better life. Claudia finds a job, learns English, attends college eventually earning her teacher degree. Her determination and positive attitude help Claudia achive her goals. My granddaughter and I discussed how hard it would be moving to a new country where we didn't know the language or money or customs, this book can be enjoyed on many levels.

Great Command of the English Language

Rereading some of her writings aftermany years and found I like her style even more than I thought. She may be a knotch above Dickens. What a command of the language! She begs to beread and reread. Thank Heavens for my Kindle--I can take her anywhere.

George Eliot is a classic writer, and a bold woman to try to swim upstream in a man's world. I have read "Adam Bede", "The Mill on the Floss" and "Silas Marner," [we called it "Silent Murder" in high school back in the 1960's]. These old books paint a good portrait of people of the times, and their fears based so much on what other people think of them. There are some universal, timeless elements that can be extracted into our lives today, but mostly it's good escape reading.

In this work, the author wades through between the quantum mysteries of Schrodinger's cat on the one hand and the pitfalls of pseudo sciences on the other and reaches out to Vedanta and succeeds in demystifying it to a large extent, although even today this field is viewed as an elitist domain or an arcane high priest's obsession. Although a natural sequel to his earlier monograph On Divine Sovereignty and Our Freedom published in 2004, this one breaks fresh ground and fields the posers, whether from the physicist or the neuroscientist. Science and religion are often viewed as polar opposites or parallel universes, but the really great thinkers do not think so. The reader who has the patience to read through fully is bound to find that the world of Vedanta is not such a scary, alien place after all.

About the Author
Neduntheru Kannan was born in Neduntheru village, close to Kudamurutti and Kaveri rivers, in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India, educated through the Sarasvati Ambal Elementary School of East Valuthoor, Board High School of Ayyampettai and later in Vivekananda college of Madras where he did post-graduate Mathematics. He taught Mathematics in Government Colleges in Madras and Mangalore for some time and then drifted into Central Government service in New Delhi much against his will. He pursued his interest in Sanskrit studies in New Delhi under Pandit Atma Ram, a staunch Arya Samajist, who introduced him into Nyaya, Mimamsa and Vyakarana, while Ananta Krishna Sastrigal of Noorani, Palghat led him into studies in Vedanta. It was only after retiring from service as Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Finance and settling in Madras, that he was favoured with the fortune of doing Kalakshepam with stalwarts like Goshtipuram Swamy, Paiyambadi Chetlur Swamy, Purisai Swamy, Perukkaranai Swamy and Mannargudi Swamy. What he cherishes most is the added fortune of receiving the blessings of the Pontiffs of Sri Ahobila Matam, Paundarikapuram Srimad Andavan Ashramam, Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam and Mysore Parakala Matam.

Vedanta and Modern life

An eclectic collection of science, religion, philosophy and autobiography. The author has presented his thoughts in a very consistent and detailed manner with plenty of references to history, mathematics etc. The concepts and ideas are relevant to our modern way of thinking. Nicely simplified and easy to follow!

I read the Upanishads and the commentaries on them and came to a point of cognitive dissonance. Adi Shankaracharya has been, in a way, immortalized when it comes to reading and analyzing the Upanishads. The cognitive dissonance comes into play when one looks at the world and sees beauty and love, but it seems like the message from Shankaracharya and the Advaita Vedantins is; "None of it's real -- it's all an illusion and you need to get off of this karmic wheel and out of this miserable existence." Kannan is a brilliant teacher and explores the concept of vishishadvaita - advaita with qualifications.

This is not beach-reading material. The book is 573 pages and the first chapter doesn't start until page 255. His hilarious take on Richard Dawkins is worth the price of the book. He also holds nothing back in the critique of Advaita Vedanta. While I ultimately feel the most resonance from reading the works of Lakshmanjoo, this book is a great opportunity to explore vishishadvaita and the concept of surrender from a Vaishnavite point of view.
