It gets even better with more books than one!

I am delighted to see this series back in print! This book series evokes the same feeling in me as do sandbox-style computer games like Morrowind or Oblivion--done with captivating descriptions and an enchanting storyline. Of all the gamebooks I've played, I find this series the most rewarding. Feels much, much more like a WORLD than a regular choose your own adventure book or other gamebooks do. (If anything, its combined text format and vast openness of play echo the good old days of text adventure games from Infocom like Zork and Enchanter.) I'm buying multiple copies as gifts for friends this Christmas to help ensure that all twelve books come out!

The best way to fill in spare time!

I discovered Fabled Lands when I was 12, and was instantly drawn to the books' brilliant artwork and the promise of exciting and unusual adventures. Since then, I've not been disappointed, and have spent many hours exploring highly detailed lands and completing quests which can span the world and change the course of the entire game.

Cities of Gold and Glory follows on from the War-Torn Kingdom; however, it can just as easily be read on its own. With a very medieval England-esque flavour, players are able to slay a fearsome dragon for a Baroness' favour, hunt for relics for a mighty wizard, and search for a tomb hidden in an enchanted forest, as well as many, many more adventures.

It is easy to put these books down and pick them up again later, although I can almost guarantee that you will not want to! Their combination of engaging storylines, exceptional artwork, and easy to follow rules makes the Fabled Lands books a perfect gift for friends, family and of course, yourself.

Another great entry into the MMORPG-like book series

This book is a lot more challenging than the first one, but they are so closely connected that you could could easily take a new character in the first into the second or vice versa. However, it makes things a bit easier if you come into Golnir (Book 2) with a bit of experience or equipment gained from Sokara (Book 1). You can certainly enjoy this book purely standalone, though, if you desire.

The land of Golnir has a different feel or theme to it than Sokara. So this gives your grand adventure a whole new experience instead of just more content in the same context. Golnir doesn't seem to be as large as Sokara, but it packs a lot of quests and events into that area. As well, there appear to be a lot more connections to the other books in the series than the first one did. This shouldn't detract from your ability to experience the book as there is plenty to do in Golnir, but it demonstrates the potential interactions, plots, or quests between the different books if one opts to buy them all (that have been published and printed). If you opt to buy only one other book in the Fabled Lands series besides the first, I would suggest this one.

Gutmann is an accomplished author for subjects related to security engineering. I enjoy reading his works because his depth and breadth in the field is amazing. I often find myself citing his books. Not only is Gutmann technically competent, he's also witty, so I find myself chuckling on occasion when reading his books (he especially likes to poke fun at PKI). On the downside, he writes run-on sentences at times. Sometimes I have to read something two or three times to parse it correctly.

He begins with a masterful overview of the early Greek philosophers, who were "the first to discover the significance of the individual," a realization intrinsic to the hermit tradition, then moves on to St. Anthony of Egypt and other Desert Fathers, the forest-dwelling Russian Orthodox startsy, our own Thoreau, the Hindu hermit Ramakrishna, the Saharan explorer Charles de Foucauld, Thomas Merton, and the poet Robert Lax. A lively, vivid, and moving history of hermits, religious and secular, and the instincts that drove them to embrace solitude. France (The Rape of Egypt, not reviewed), deeply attracted to the solitary life himself, began his investigation because he wondered ``if solitude confers insights not available to society.'' He traces the origins of a belief in isolation as part of a meditative life to China in the sixth century b.c., when the newly emergent faith of Taoism taught that ``it is by withdrawing rather than by asserting ourselves, through retreat rather than pursuit . . . that we acquire wisdom.'' This belief was similar to the ideas of the Desert Fathers, devout Christians who, in the centuries immediately after the rise of that faith, retreated to harsh landscapes well away from society, where they could wrestle with the meaning of their faith and the stubborn appeals of the flesh. France devotes a chapter to the Russian startsy, revered spiritual figures who spent years apart from society in an attempt to attain serenity--but who then often rejoined society to share what they had learned of the deeper instincts of faith. There are studies of, among others, Henry David Thoreau, the Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna, and Thomas Merton, whose writings offer a contemporary insight into ``the nature of solitude, its risks and its benefits.'' The book concludes with a chapter on the poet Robert Lax, who has lived a largely solitary, reflective life on the Greek island of Patmos for four decades. Writing in a prose of great clarity, and drawing heavily on the precise, powerful reflections of solitaries and religious hermits, France offers a succinct survey of the forces that have drieven men and women to separate themselves from society to pursue their faith, and argues persuasively that solitude still can, in our relentlessly crowded, anxious, hustling age, offer unique spiritual benefits and insights. Too few books are available on the life of the contemplative. With that said, this book is already a rarity. It's quality is quite good, although the pages have yellowed in only three years, like most books in our "technologically advanced" culture.
The content of the book gave this reviewer a great sense of peace, as it is comforting to find that others hold the experience of solitude in high esteem. It seems that because of France's firsthand experience with this simple pleasure, he is able to describe the perspective in a unique and calming way, far from the usual deprecatory references to the Unibomber, etc.
It undoubtedly helped to alleviate some of this stigma, as well as piquing interest in the solitary life. We need respected hermits in this day and age, as an outside view of the inside is what keeps us balanced. I recommend it to everyone.

wonderful book

I never heard of this book and bought it on recommendation from a reviewer on the amazon site. I am so glad I bought it. It is a wonderful read, with lots of interesting bits and pieces on well known hermits in ancient times, without the book being superficial. Quite the opposite really. It is a good and insightful study on those who seek a life of solitude. I have only read about 15 pages of it, and glanced through the rest, but I already know that this will be one of my favourites.

It is a book to read and enjoy again and again. Highly recommended.

A beautiful account of man's timeless search for solitude and truth, this book scours the great religious traditions and recounts the lives and writings of some of the coolest, wierdest and most sane people the world has ever seen. The chapter on Charles de Foucauld is itself worth the price of the book.

It's a nice handy book, just like pocket medicine, but it doesn't feel as well organized. There are a lot of topics and they're short and concise, but finding your topic meanings going to the index every time and searching through all of the topics because there isn't much of an order. Once it gets reorganized, it will be much better.

Excellent art book

The Battle Network series has been a guilty pleasure for me as a Mega Man fan, I loved the old school action of the series and going in I wasn't sure how I was going to like the new rpg elements for this new series but that fear was quickly silenced once I started playing. Anyone who knows a thing about Capcom how ever knows that they do not skimp on designing their games and this was glimpsed in what barely passed for box art and game insert, Udon has fixed this by translating the art book that covers the entire series( even the gamecube game ).

There are four chapters in total that are broken up into promo/package art( chapter 1 ), characters( chapter 2 ), anime/real/cyber world/viruses designs( chapter 3 ) and extras( chapter 4 ). What is great is that various artist who have contributed run down the process of selected art pieces which are shown in rough/fully detailed/colored giving you the complete picture on how it came to be, some even mention what their bosses thought of it and what they did if they tweaked it. No art piece is cast aside as each page features three or more pictures on each page with the occasional drawing getting one page to itself which isn't a bad thing as the ones that got that honor are pretty damn good, in fact in chapter 4 where they go over the battle chips and various merchandise it's so jam packed yet everything on each page is still visible.

The glossy front and back covers compliment this thick book with it's smooth interior pages that clocks in at 137 pages in total with the last 4 being ads for other Udon localized art books( Mega Man Star Force: Official Complete Works is up next ), while it seems Udon no longer feels the need to publish original Street Fighter comics which I also liked they've been on a roll with the art books that have been worth the price and then some

Great for battle network fans

This book was full of good art and little side notes from the creators with bits of information.Even short bios of some characters. It has a whole section with the pages of the original design packet for battle network that would be used to pitch the idea. It contains everything from Bass, to stuff like sol cross and even the japan only games have parts in here. Highly recommend.

Just Buy It !!!

Some people collect stamps, coins, baseball cards or comic books. I don't do that. Instead, I collect all the best art books. If you collect art books like I do I would say definitely buy this one. The artwork is just amazing!!! If I could give this more than 5 stars, I definitely would. This really is a "must have book"

I would recommend this to anyone reading this review. I also own almost all the other Udon Entertainment art books and I would like to take the time to recommend them all. In my opinion Udon is just the best of the best. I don't work for them. I don't get paid by them. I'm just a fan of their art books.

Superb Debut

It is gratifying to me, and it comes along so rarely, that a story has the trifecta of important pieces, all developed well: character, setting and plot. Zoya and Marcus are 'everyman' in different ways, Marcus in recovery from a “Mesh” addiction (that escape to a fantasy world of his choosing where his body is stabilized in a bed and his head hooked into escape instead of reality), son of a very wealthy (but mostly dead) man who had managed to finally eradicate viruses from the online world. Zoya is working poor in a place with DRASTIC disparities between people who can do pretty much anything they want and people barely getting by. And Ted manages to give them realistic motive to get involved and realistic means to 'up their game' to the necessary skills. The setting is fascinating and seems realistic, given the distance in the future, and the plot is highly tense and comes together (several PoV characters start in different places) well.

More than all this though, this is the first book I've read in quite some time that was completely Un-put-downable. I found myself reaching for it every chance I got. Even if you are not a Sci-Fi or Cyberpunk fan normally, the thriller nature of this and the great characters will pull you in.

The Immortality Game is worth your money

You know when a friend has written a book, and you think of the other books written by other friends that really weren't good, but you keep buying books by your friends because 1) they're your friends, and 2) 1 in 10 is very, very good, so you go ahead and buy the book, and hope you can be honest with your friend afterward? I had those concerns buying The Immortality Game. I know Ted Cross. I like Ted Cross, human. And now, I'm thrilled to report that I'm a fan of Ted Cross, author. Ted asked me to write a review of his book, but he has no idea what I'm about to say.
The Immortality Game is a rush. You tear through 2 insanely difficult days in the lives of the characters, and Cross' writing pulls you through chapter after chapter. I was late for work one morning, because I started reading the book with my coffee, and didn't want to put it down. I even forgot to drink my coffee (and people who know me know that I never forget to drink my coffee).
It isn't just an exciting blast through events; like all good science fiction, you are led to think philosophically about life, about what the future of computing might be, and how connected we really want to be with one another. You get a little questioning of the morality of certain aspects of cloning, some major class divisions, and some deep, deep problems with addiction and its implications. But all that philosophy is imbedded in the story so seamlessly that you find yourself thinking about it later, rather than feeling bogged down in reading it.
I would have loved to give it 5 stars, but there are enough minor hiccups in language usage to give me pause. They are the sort of thing that would be caught by a team of editors at a larger publisher, but the story telling compelled me onward.
You need to read this book.

It's Taken, But You Don't Fully Know What Comes Next

Very good premise, very well developed world, extremely well-developed, rounded characters. All of it just tacked on to a good, but not special plot.

The plot of this book is a chase story, our wonderful protagonist Zoya and her foil Marcus are chased through a moderately far future Russian city. This is all well and good, but the middle of it is just the same couple scenes over and over again. This is where I got frustrated. Thankfully it was saved by the well written characters. And of special note the plot device of "Oh no I have been given the skills of a super soldier, I'm scared and can't use them against bad guys" was handily avoided.

So while I was frustrated by the repetitiveness at times, Ted Cross really did a good job of subverting my expectations and making a fairly decent story. I'm afraid this book isn't one of my top, but I could be convinced to read some of his other stuff. This was, after all, his debut novel.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a novel version of Taken and with a female protagonist instead of Liam Neeson. And Ruskies.
