Great Fantasy Horror (Spoiler Free Review)

Great Fantasy Horror is hard to find, but you'll find loads of it here at an affordable price. This omnibus includes three short stories: A Choice of Hatreds, Meat Wagon, and Witch Work. It also includes a trilogy of novels: Witch Hunter, Witch Finder, and Witch Killer.

Story:
The tales follow Mathias Thulmann, a templar of the Imperial Church of Sigmar, as he travels through the empire and fights the forces of Chaos. The bulk of the story revolves around Mathias tracking down a powerful ancient book of spells before it falls into the wrong hands. Throughout the adventure, Mathias will fight demons, vampires, zombies, skaven, and black hearted men who are just as evil.

Characters:
Mathias Thulmann is similar to Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane. In the beginning of the book, the author states that the character was influenced by horror icon Vincent Price. If you read Mathias's lines with Vincent Price's voice, it works perfectly. Mathais is an inquisitor, which means the he burns heretics at the stake, but he never crosses the line or takes pleasure in his grim work. At times he makes difficult moral decisions because his occupation doesn't allow much room for compassion.

Accompanying Mathias is Streng, an often drunk womanizing mercenary, who aids Mathias on his quests. Streng is a good fighter, loyal to the coin Mathias pays him, and often carries out Mathias's dirty work like torturing heretics and evil men. At times, Streng enjoys his job a bit too much.

The villains in this book are not simple beasts, but intelligent and powerful enemies with dire plans for the empire. You get a clear view of their power hungry motivations and diabolical schemes.

Action:
This book is loaded with quality action. There are black powder pistols, swords, halberds, undead, magic, zombies, cannons, etc... Heads roll, arms roll, evil burns, and many good men are killed, eaten, or worse. You can expect duels, skirmishes, ambushes, and full on Warhammer Style Battles.

Writing Style:
The writing style is fairly poetic and simple. Despite the simple phrasing, the environments and characters are all very well done, from the shady, to the eerie, to the creepy, to the foreboding.

Maturity: Teens
It's horror, so expect evil schemes, gore, torture, and blood. But there isn't any graphic sex or streams of harsh language.

Overall:
This is a great value. You get 3 short stories and 3 novels for under $15. The stories vary from good to great and they will definitely satisfy your appetite for the macabre.

If you enjoyed this book, I would highly recommend Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane and The Witcher books (by Sapkowski) and video games by CD Projekt.

Blockbuster perfection! Five stars, easily...

This collection of CL Werner's Mathias Thulmann novels and short stories gave me - along with William King's Gotrek & Felix series - some of the most enjoyable reading in the last couple of years.

Werner's characters, both protagonists and antagonists, are very well developed and offer colourfully contrasting points of view. The story takes place in the Warhammer world, for once in the relative backwater of Stirland, a remote province of the Empire, far from the more familiar grandeur of Imperial cities such as Altdorf, Nuln and Middenheim.

The plot evolves typically at a fast pace, aside from the first half of 'Witch Hunter', which enables the author to create an atmosphere of anguish and expectation in the eerie surroundings of Klausberg. The beginning of the novel felt to me like a cross between Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Jack Yeovil/Kim Newman's Drachenfels (for the atmospheric prologue that leaves the reader feeling like the truth is perhaps different than it appears, only to be proven right in the most unexpected way). By the time we reach the tail end of the story though, Werner has introduced two of the greatest villains of the Warhammer world and the plot accelerates and finishes strongly, tying nicely into 'Witch Finder', the second full-length novel in the collection, in which Werner conjures up yet another fantastic villain (ok, no more spoilers...). The omnibus ends with 'Witch Killer', which stops short of tying up every loose end and therefore lets us dream about further installments of the great witch hunter's saga !

Mathias Thulmann is one of my favourite Black Library characters. He is less powerful and confident than say Brunner the Bounty Hunter or Gotrek Gurnisson, but he does not lack courage and understanding of the 'powers of Old Night' and doesn't hesitate to confront ignoble monsters, armed only with his faith in Sigmar and some dodgy-sounding weapons. His vulnerability and constant struggle against great evil make him easy to root for, and his relationship with Streng contributes just enough comic relief so as not to be dragged down by Thulmann's gloomy nature.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting read, whether they are Black Library aficionados or not.

Excellent WFRP fantasy

This novel follows the exploits of a Witch Hunter fighting the forces of Chaos/Skaven/Undead/etc... in a grim and perilous world.

This book is a must read for GM's that want a better understanding of how the forces of darkness operate in this world.

I especially like how he fleshes out the villains, gives us their history and shows WHY they are doing what they are doing. While some are outright depraved monsters, many were once people who made a poor choice and ended up on a dark path.

For example, a wizard uses a grimoire to try and heal his lord of a nasty disease. Unbeknownst to the wizard, the tome is really a cursed item of the Chaos Lord, Nurgle, and Chaos ensues.

I also like how interlinked many of the plots were. Minor seeds of Chaos planted just right can create brilliant results.

Superb book on polyhedral origami

This book is easy to follow with simple, clearly stated directions for building polyhedron models ranging from simple to complex. The instructions nicely couple easy-to-read diagrams with large, colorful images of the finished products that help me to visualize my end products as I fold.

I am currently working my way through all of the models in this book, and I am really enjoying the gradual way that Tomoko Fuse introduces new models. She groups obvious types together in the book's sections, and methodically explains (by text, diagram and picture) each unit from simple to complex variation. Instructions include the type/name of the structure, level of difficulty, size of the paper needed, number of each type of paper unit required, a three-dimensional diagram of the polyhedral structure (for more complex structures) and assembly diagrams that show how the pieces fit together. All of the instructional images are in color so it is easy to differentiate between front and back of each paper unit, and to tell the difference between units in the assembly diagrams.

This book presents reusable paper unit types that are creatively put to use in the models in a number of different ways. For instance, I like the way I can create colorful joints that add to the overall presentation of each piece. I especially like the "Various Methods of Assembling Double-Sided Hexagonal Rings" section where Fuse explains how to take the traditional polyhedral structures she has taught and extend their shapes creatively in order make new designs. In general, there are enough variations of each type in all sections that I do not feel like I am working through the drudgery of the same projects over and over as I have with some other books.

Overall, this is an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in exploring polyhedron models with origami.

Great Photos

This is a beautifully presented book with wonderful models and photos. But a lot of the units are repeats if you already own Fuse's all time best book Unit Origami - Multidimensional Transforms. About a third of the book is materials from her Unit Origami book. Additionally there are a few beautiful dodecahedra and several other units. Overall it is a must-have if you are a modular origami lover.

Extraordinary

Really, I believe this is one of Tomoko Fuse best books I've ever seen. Great pictures fully and well explained, English is not my native language but it results pretty easy to understand it.

The book's design is so cool, I just can't wait to do any of the projects inside... I encourage every one who like Origami to buy it.

Even, each project it's labeled with a difficulty level category starting at one star to three stars. But all the proyects are so well explained that if you have a little folding experience you will find easy to build them.

Gr 7 Up-This biography of the first student killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, was adapted by her mother and Klingsporn from the teen's writing and diaries. Scott emphasizes her relationship with God and her commitment to Christian living, and the book provides spaces for readers to do their own journaling, prompted by questions and headed "Just Between God and Me." The text is illustrated with facsimiles of the young woman's journals, poems, songs, and drawings. Chapter 11 offers her unedited writings, to provide an ending more upbeat than Chapter 10, which is her chilling journal entries for the morning of April 20, followed by her mother's essay on her own journey toward forgiveness. It is clear that the teen had some talent for writing and sketching. She was serious about her faith and her search for God. The problem with the book lies in the adaptation and fictionalizing of her journals. When she talks about Anne Frank or how she believes that she'll never marry, one must wonder if this is actually what Rachel wrote, or if it has been elaborated on by the editors to increase the effect of foreshadowing. The first-person narrative makes it more readable, but also begs the question-is this Rachel as she was, or as her mother remembers her? Probably a little of each. Buy where student writing, Christian witnessing, and Misty Bernall's She Said Yes: The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall (Plough, 1999) are popular, or for a comprehensive collection on the events at Columbine.

Honest and Open Book

I have read the book The Journals of Rachel Scott and I feel the writer had a very tough job to write from Rachel's point of veiw without ever knowing her personally. As Rachel's sister I feel that she did an awesome job. Much of the book was based on things written and said to her friends and family in letters and journals. Though no person could ever truly capture who Rachel was and what she would write I feel that the book shows a young girl who made a difference with her life because of her willingness. I am very proud of my mom who wrote this book and I know that Rachel would want her to know that same!!

Inspirational, But Not Really Rachel's Journals

I found this to be a very inspirational book, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very interesting to read from the point-of-view of Rachel. And so, in that way, I feel it was successful. That said, it is more of a biography than the journals of Rachel Scott, and that bothers me. I think lots of people might buy this book thinking that it's the much talked about diary of Rachel Scott, and who could blame them for coming away with that impression. I kept hearing about how prophetic her journals were and how she had feelings that were almost eerie in the way they came true. I wanted to read her own words. And while I did get to read pieces here and there from her actual journals, I feel that, if a book is titled, "The Journals of Rachel Scott," it really should be the journals of Rachel Scott, and not just an interpretation of who she was written by someone who never met her, but read her writing and talked with her family and friends. I appreciate that her family didn't want to share the darker aspects of their loved one when those darker aspects might overshadow the positive aspects in the reader's mind and give a false view of who she was. I understand that the truth is not always in the facts. But the problem is that I now don't know how much of the narrative was really true to Rachel and how much of it was Debra Klinsporn putting words into her mouth. If this was a biography, that would be one thing. But for something that is advertised to be a book of journals, it's misleading to give the reader anything less than what is promised. And it casts doubt on the entire work and makes you wonder how much is really her and how much is just one person's idea of what she might have thought about. When Debra Klingsporn admitted to having authored a majority of the book, she gave herself ample room to embellish. And when you consider the fact that Rachel was held up as some kind of prophetic martyr, just a simple alteration of a phrase, or a simple word choice could be seen as manipulative. At least they admitted to the text being doctored in the foreward---so I don't think they were trying to be dishonest. I just had a problem with the title and the way this was presented to the reader. That's my opinion.

But I don't want to give the impression that this was a horrible book. It's really very good. I just want people to take it for what it is---a "journey of faith" that was inspired by Rachel's journals and her impact on others. Don't go into this expecting for it to be written in Rachel's own words.

Very Good Book

This is a very intresting book that gives you glimpses into what Rachel Scott was thinking and feeling and how she delt with them by her faith in God.
However, it does bother me that this book is an adaptation of Rachel's journals and that the reader may not be getting the whole picture(and this only adds to my personal skepticism of some things surrounding her death and why she died) and this is why I gave the book 4 stars.
Overall, this is a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know what Rachel Scott was thinking and feeling.
