Very creative and imaginative storytelling, paints a picture of the scene so vividly!

The way the author sets up and describes the scenes and events of the book I felt like I was experiencing the circus myself. I was also impressed to find out the author is also the illustrator that did the cover art and images in the book. I hope to see more books by him and be lost in a new adventure. After reading this book I plan on sharing it with my 10 year old daughter who is very artistic/creative and reminds me very much of the main character in this story.

Rudholm cleverly weaves together a tale of self-revelation combined with the beauty and wonder of the world of art. This book is a fantastic journey of self-discovery while reminding us that we all possess the power inside to become who we were really meant to be. I would highly recommend this to anyone between the ages of 12 to 14, and to any art teacher who wants to introduce kids to art in a creative way.

The myths are compared with one another, then with similar material from other Mesoamerican cultures, particularly the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the ancient Quiche Maya. Searching for common elements and underlying structures in the myths, Graulich shows that the principal history told in the origin myths is almost always that of the passage from one era to another, by way of a rupture between the sky and earth as a consequence of a transgression. Banished by the creators to darkness, the creatures return to light following a sacrifice. The same structure is found in the migration myths, in which an expulsion from the land of origin is followed, after wanderings in darkness, by an arrival in a Promised Land similar to the land of origin. The myths form a grand cycle of darkness and light that bears striking resemblances to themes of the Christian tradition. Drawing on extensive research in ancient Mexican source materials and modern ethnographic accounts, Graulich separates myths posing as history from actual historical events and illuminates the long unity of Mesoamerican religious thought. An invaluable resource for scholars of Mesoamerican studies, this book will also be welcomed by readers interested in American Indians or comparative religion.

Myths of Ancient Mexico

While this book was not a particulary fun read, it is very helpful in understanding the organization of ancient Mesoamerican myth. It is wordy and sometimes confusing, but sheds light on Mesoamerican studies and can be helpful in further understanding of the Mesoamerican writing systems of the Mixtec and Maya. It was most helpful for reading The Codex Borgia which can also be purchased at this site.

Aesthetic Autobiography is a fascinating study of the transmutation of life fact into fiction. Nalbantian's basic premise is that one's fictionalization of one's own life reveals more about an individual than an individual's earnest attempt at self documentation by way of a "memoir." The first chapter is an analysis of autobiography proper; in the second chapter Nalbantian introduces theories of "aesthetic autobiography," and in the subsequent chapters she relates her model of a shared aesthetics to the giants of twentieth-century autobiography. For example, writers of aesthetic autobiography share a concentration on a place, a childhood memory, and a beloved family member. In additon, they each utilize a concrete element as an anchor in time. It is a very creative work, and any individual interested in the creative process, the transmuation of life fact into fiction, will find this study essential and illuminating.

More Genre-Bashing

While Nalbantian has veiled it in "neutral" academic prose and by using the particular cases of a few famous writers, her argument is just another example of memoir-hating. While I think it's an interesting exercise to try to trace author experience through fiction, doing so in a way that bashes an entire other category of writing should certainly make us suspicious. And while I agree that many readers are obsessed with memoir for all the wrong reasons, there are memoirists who do more than regurgitate facts, who actually write in literarily complex ways. The search for a pithy, simple thesis has unfortunately led S.N. astray in what might otherwise have been very interesting work.

My son who is now in his late 20s and in legal trouble has been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and bipolar disorder. Reading this book has helped me tremendously understand the disease and assist in his legal defense as well as his healing. I highly recommend it due to it's ease of reading and factual information. Had I read this book when he was in his teens, perhaps the problems he now faces would not have occured.

'Ben's Indecisions' is a better book title .

This tale's setting is in New Zealand and portrays the vacillating and at most times confusing story of past lovers. They 'accidentally' meet and try ever-so painfully to rekindle their love.The story is froth with so many life-changing decisions that are quickly made and discarded. The fact it ends 'happily ever after ' is a total surprise to me.
Their 2 yr old son ,Jasper, accepts Ben into his life too easily. It leaves me thinking that he,Jasper, was either truly starved for the love of his father or a male role model. Mia seems so willing to capitulate her life and her family's retreat business to Ben after a romantic night. A life and business that she has toiled for and rebuilt after her father's suicide. Ben causally suggests that they get married and move back to his family's privately-owned vineyard while she deserts her business. Mia inwardly frets about Ben's decision, yet there is very little done on her part to actively convince him that this decision was not made in the best interest of her or her son. When Ben finally realizes that he's made another unilateral decision that has hurt Mia, he decides to leave her and her son in New Zealand even though they are now married. Does Mia fight against this impetous decision of Ben's? No, she does not. She just cries a bit and goes right back to the operation of her business. Too many rashly, 'Ben-made', decisions that irked me throughout this book. I doubted that 'true love' was present. An OK overall plot with a weird family curse thrown in but weak, unstable characters detract from it.
Both Ben and Mia have undergone life changing events in their respective lives. But these events don't make them wiser, stronger, more confident, and less selfish people.Tsk! Tsk! This story is really a 3.5 rating.

Mia and Ben are good names for the character's in this book. I liked the name Jasper for their secret child's name. The book took some weird turns like Mia and Ben getting married then Ben talking about leaving his wife and son to return to his home country. Jasper did take to his father, Ben, right away without any fear. I liked how Jasper was given the necklace at the end; i guess to end the family curse.
