I do not know Dave Turner. I did not give birth to him or give birth to any of his children. I got his first book as a free download and read it on vacation last year. I preordered Paper Cuts (How To Be Dead Book 2)so that it would appear on my Kindle the moment that the file became available because I just loved How to Be Dead THAT much.

So what did I like so much about Paper Cuts (How To Be Dead Book 2)? Marry Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and their offspring will be Dave Turner. Turner’s fiction is the world underneath ours that the average person simply can’t see. Death occupies an office in a fairly upscale part of town and shares space with monkeys writing on typewriters recently rewarded with a major studio deal. Turner’s clever humor is breathtaking.

That Death and his cohorts decide that they’re not going to play the game of a man they’ve never met was intriguing. When the world does seem to be ending, it could be the work of their frenemy, Beelzebub.

If you like social commentary presented in a clever package, fantasy or authors like Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, pick this novel up immediately if not sooner. You will not regret the purchase.

Fun and entertaining

More like 4.5, but I'm a little picky.
I'd never heard of this author before this series, it was a really pleasant surprise to discover him.
The characters are fun, the plot a little predictable and slow but very well written so you don't really mind. Also the dialog and banter are engaging and entertaining, and there were enough interesting clever ideas/twists to keep things going.
I have read this and the previous book, and would be happy to see (and buy, and read) another installment in the series.
Reminiscient of A Lee Martinez (and a little of Terry Pratchett), if your a fan definitely give this a go.

Immensely entertaining

This book and its predecessor are the best books I have read in a long while. I was reminded of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, but with a slightly more practical side. I had a very difficult time putting them down and read much later into the night than I should have. I look forward to the third book in this series, it really cannot come out soon enough!

The entries, written by expert contributors, are critical as well as informative. Each begins with a biographical, artistic, religious, or historical background section, which places the subject within a larger cultural and historical context. A description and analysis follow. This section may include a discussion of the fool's appearance, gender role, ethical and moral roles, social function, and relationship to such themes as nature, time, and mortality. The entry then discusses the critical reception of the subject and concludes with an extensive bibliography of general works.

High Praise for the Fool

I was searching for a Medieval Fool, and found what may be one of the best books on the subject produced to date. The research was meticulous, each point made being supported by quotation and examples. The illustrations are wonderful, absolutely apposite, many of which were quite new to me. Beatrice Otto is a superb example of an author who knows her stuff and has the magnificent gift of making it interesting and entertaining. For the serious researcher - or for someone who just fancies tracing the course of comedy - this is just the book.

Master the Mistress was a great erotic read. This book was no different from the books in Brides of Kindred series, except that it was shorter. If you’ve read that series you know seduction, sexual encounters, betrayal and dominance will happen, it just becomes a matter of when and how. Kaylee inherited more property and money than she could have imagined. Leaving her home and traveling to Opulex she befriends Lyra. Lyra is the complete opposite of Kaylee and she sees Kaylee as a stepping stone to increasing her standing within the society. Solar has been captured and sold as a slave to Kaylee. Lyra sees her chance at getting everything she wants but what she doesn’t realize is that Solar has seen and heard her plans. Kaylee’s life is in Solar’s hands literally; Solar can either escape or get the revenge he’s seeking, but what he doesn’t expect is the way he feels and reacts to Kaylee. When Kaylee life is in danger will he care for her enough to save her? Can Kaylee bond the Havoc who doesn’t believe in bonding? This novella is a great addition to the BOK series and if you’ve ever wondered what happened to Solar here’s your chance.
Would I recommend it? Yes, if you’ve read the Brides of the Kindred series, you should know what’s in store. This series is very erotic but still packed with action and anyone looking for good paranormal books should definitely give this series a try. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Part of the Kindred universe

Evangeline Andersons story entitled Mastering the Mistress had me jumping for joy as it's part of her awesome Kindred series! Following on from the book Enslaved we meet Solar a Havoc warrior who has been drugged and offered for sale as a sex slave! He is bought by the sheltered and completely out of her depth Kaylee but on the matriarchal planet Solar finds himself on men are considered savage brutes frequently abused and worthless . Kaylee is unsure just what to make of Solar but as treachery stretches out it's hand it's her slave who will save her. Can Kaylee let him go?
This story was previously featured in the anthology Mastered 2 but if followers of the Kindred series missed it this is an excellent opportunity to catch up. Expect a strong alpha male showing the female of his dreams just how important to him she really is and prepare to need a cold shower as this talented author yet again turns up the heat. If this series is new to you and you enjoy hot sci fi then start at the beginning with Claimed and enjoy the journey

Mastering the Mistress is by the talented Evangeline Anderson and is a Brides of the Kindred novella.

I have read all the Kindred books but ever since i read the last book (Enslaved, book 14) and heard about Thrace's story I have been wondering what had happened to his best friend, Solar. Thankfully I found out in this book. My god, he is so sexy! I loved the story between him and the intelligent but naïve Kaylee. I love their journey and anyone who is looking to read a great book should grab this one for sure.

The story revolves around a very sheltered and naïve Kaylee who is in need of a slave which is where our very sexy Solar comes into the story. Solar is a Havoc warrior who has been drugged and is being sold as a sex slave. When Kaylee buys Solar she is very unprepared about what is going to unfold. Kaylee might be naïve about life but she is very intelligent and quite the match for the worldly Havoc. They sizzle together and you are going to need a bucket of ice just to keep cool through this story. Loved this story!!!

Concise and comprehensive

This book is a complete study guide that fits the needs of engineers as well as those of newcomers to the field. Its most important feature is the way the author allows students with a little background in mathematics to go through all the topics presented without getting lost or discouraged. The purpose is achieved with a simple but efficient strategy: an easy to follow level is the main body of the book and a lot of examples provide the reader with all the tools necesary to grasp the basics. The higher level material (advanced mathematics) is therefore not indispensable to actually understand Image Enhancement, Image Restoration, Preparation for Automatic Vision, and a little bit of Image Compression.

A book long needed

This is a book that many of us wanted to see in the market since long ago. Among all the published books on image processing only a few of them devote enough space to both theoretical fundamentals and practical issues.

The mathematical principles are clearly a major concern for the authors, so they are a fundamental part of the book and are very clearly explained. Moreoever, most of the fundamental principles are presented as answers to key questions frequenty posed by anyone seeking to understand the basics of image processing, what makes the book very easy to read and undestand.

Another nice distinctive characteristic of the book is the detailed explanation on practical issues and fully developed examples that allow the reader to thoroughly understand how to solve problems and how to implement the main image processing algorithms.

The book covers all the topics that one expects to find in an introductory book but also some of the more important advanced topics that have proven to be indispensable for any one aiming to understand modern image processing such as singular value decomposition, independent component analysis, multispectral image processing, homgeneous and inhomogeneous image restoration, etc.

Excellent desk reference

I found the author's explanations more thorough and useful than anything I could find online. Usually I'll spend about half an hour trying to learn a technique from internet sources, then I'll remember this book. It's always the last thing I need to read on a topic.

If you are new to image processing, I would recommend getting the Gonzales and Woods textbook before this one. This is a little harder than Gonzales and Woods.

The material he collected, combined with diligent research and considerable journalistic talent, comprises a first-class account of an important aspect of the war that has not received major attention. The pilots are portrayed in a dimensional way rarely found in war literature, and Grant conveys vividly what it was like to live through intense anti-aircraft fire, dogfights with MIGs, downing and rescue (as well as downing and capture) and psychic burnout. This is more than an air-combat book, however: the author follows the course of disagreements between the high command and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara over the usefulness of the air war, the reaction of the pilots to charges of bombing civilian areas, the struggle of a pilot's widow to confirm that he has been killed and then to reconcile herself to his death. In this sympathetic and penetrating history the pilots of a fighter squadron aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany battle the internal politics of their unit, their own doubts about the Vietnam War, and fears for their safety, while acting like fighter jocks, all bravado and hard living. Laced through this diverse, personality-filled work are the words of wives and many of the pilots themselves and the author's telling assessment of the bombing policy, which was tentative and ineffective despite the courage and skill of the men who carried it out. The action begins in July 1966 and ends as a final run is cancelled due to bad weather in 1972. This is a valuable examination of the Navy's bombing of the North, with less emphasis on hardware than a pilot might wish, but biting and insightful. A gem. Mel D. Lane, Sacramento, Cal.

From the very first chapter, I knew that "Over the Beach" was the diary I had failed to keep while serving on the U.S.S. Oriskany (CVA 34) during it's deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin in 1966. Over and over again, I found myself reliving the actions described there. Instantly putting faces to the names. Remembering the 16 October 1966 fire in hangar bay one. The only mistery left is how someone who was not there know so much of the times and the people ? It was genuinely like finding an old family photo album, or listning to an elderly uncle reminise about things that happened in your youth. "Over the Beach" should be viewed as a diary into the times and minds of those that flew from Aircraft Carriers during the early Viet Nam era. It is not a book to satisfy the idle mind, but one that fills in the gaps created by time and selective amnesia. To someone in great thirst, a small tumbler of cold water will seem as an ocean. "over the beach" provided exactly the same satisfaction to me.

History as it should be...

Zalin Grant's "Over The Beach" is an account of fighter squadron 162 from the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam war. Grant does a masterful job of blending the history, with the real lives of the people who were a part of that history.
The reader feels the palpable emotions of the pilots as they "crossed over the beach" on their way to targets in Hanoi and Haiphong. The squadron was incredibly successful, but with that success came great loss. Many pilots were shot down over North Vietnam where there was almost no chance of rescue. The reader also hears from those pilots who became prisoners.
Grant incorporates the history of the air conflict into the book as well. Johnson, Nixon, McNamara, and Kissinger all weigh heavily into this account. The politics of the conflict led to a war fought on confusing terms. But this doesn't read like some history text.
From the terror of carrier landings to the wild frat boy parties aboard the Oriskany, this book covers it all. From the adulterous behavior of many of the piots to the gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions suffered by an MIA's wife, this book does not hold any punches. It may be hard to find this book (some libraries may have it) but it is one of the finest (and personal) accounts of carrier warfare in Vietnam I have ever read.

This book is about the fighter pilots of the Fighter Squadron 162 - based on the USS Oriskany. This book is an excellent account of the exploits of carrier based fighter pilots. You understand their fears, their trepidations, the danger of carrier landings at night, and the general terror and excitement of flying fighter jets in Viet Nam. It's told in a "you are there" context. We feel the pain of the wives as they learn their husbands are shot down and not coming home; the strain they go through awaiting word of their husbands. The book is quite stunning and difficult to put down. It's one of the best I've read concerning the air war in Viet Nam.
