Just as dancing is "the art of moving in accord with a pattern," says Mary Oliver, so is writing metrical verse. "One sorts out the pattern, one relies on it, and relaxes from effort to pleasure." The rules (concerning rhyme, line length, and pattern) are made if not to be deliberately flouted, then at least to be toyed with. Oliver claims to have written this book for both writers and readers of metrical verse, but it is an odd sort of fit for either. A writer might wish for a little more detail; a reader might find too much. The book works best as a kind of refresher course, for those who have forgotten the difference between metaphysical and Petrarchan conceits, between masculine and feminine rhymes, and would like to brush up a bit. Oliver does a wonderful job of explaining why the most common forms of metrical verse came to prevail (for instance, the five-foot line is "the line which is the closest to the breathing capacity of our lungs"), and of nudging us into reading more metrical poetry (nearly half this volume is devoted to works by John Donne, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, and others). Blessedly, Oliver reminds us that, though one could get carried away trying new meters and forms, one shouldn't expect to be writing a lot of double ionics anytime soon. A masterful, spare, profound look at the craft of poetry.

Mary Oliver brings to this small book all the clarity and economy that characterize her poetry, and produces the most plain-spoken, profound work that I have read on poetry as a conscious craft. The book is divided into five parts. Part One is 12 brief, carefully-exampled chapters with titles like "Breath", "Line Length", and "Meter in Non-Metric Verse". Part Two is a single chapter on "Style". Part Three explores scansion for both reader and writer. Part Four is a 2-page statement of the timelessness of poetry. Part Five is a fine little anthology of works studied in the earlier text. This austere, remote poet has written a book that speaks to the reader with great intimacy and passion. To quote from Oliver's envoi: "No poet ever wrote a poem to dishonor life, to compromise high ideals, to scorn religious views, to demean hope or gratitude, to argue against tenderness, to place rancor before love, or to praise littleness of soul. Not one. Not ever."

Mary Oliver shines

Mary Oliver shines in this prose manual on the writing and issues of poetic composition. Her economy of words combines with an easy style to help an utter novice (like me) gain an understanding of the metric and rhyming tools involved. Clarity and suppleness of expression mark this book and I would recommend it to anyone who reads poetry or has an interest in trying their hand at writing.

What you may enjoy the most is that Mary does not wander all about the landscape of poetry, but maintains a steady course and uses many pretty little examples to illustrate the concepts. The book is not long but is one of those gems that you will enjoy diving into from time to times for some thoughtful reading on poetics. The author's personality shines through the words - and there is no pretense here, just someone who loves and lives through words.

Consider reading her Wild Geese if you haven't yet - a stunning beautiful piece of work.

These 31 classic stories record much of the cultural climate of 20th-century America, its West in particular, constituting, as the NBA and Pulitzer Prize-winning author affectionately notes, not an autobiography, but "a sort of personal record." As combined here, the tales are a window onto a vivid American past that is as focused as a Norman Rockwell painting, although far more astringent and hardly as wholesome. Settings range from Stegner's native Canada to Utah, California and Vermont--all memorable places in the author's life. The stories are not arranged chronologically: Stegner's dark, voyeuristic peek into the lives of women awaiting letters from men serving in WW II gives way to an account of a bloodthirsty boyhood on the hot, flat frontier of a Saskatchewan farm. Best of all is the slicing wit of "Field Guide to the Western Birds," in which a curmudgeon acidly comments on the petulant antics of a would-be virtuoso. Several of the stories have been reshaped and interpolated into such novels as Wolf Willow and The Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Stegner is best known for his epic novels of the American West--books such as the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose (1971)--but in his younger years he was a prolific short story writer. Like the novels, Stegner's stories are traditional in style and typically look back with nostalgic longing to a nobler period of America's past. However, since most of these works were written in the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties, the "present" Stegner condemns is itself impossibly old-fashioned, and his anti-modern bias seems a bit ridiculous. Some of the stories in this collection are simply museum pieces, but several retain their vitality, notably "The Sweetness of the Twisted Apples," "The City of the Living," and "The Volunteer." Recommended for larger fiction collections.

LITERATURE WITH A BIG "L"

In his short stories, Wallace Stegner writes scenes and descriptions that come alive as if the reader were right there, looking and feeling and smelling the world of the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's, shaking hands with down-home people, making small talk and eating a home-cooked meal. In fact, they are so well written, his stories remind me of 3-D. When 3-D movies first came out people in the theaters screamed and ducked for cover as the characters on the big screen seemed to leap right out into the audience. They were that real. Well, that's the best way I can describe Wallace Stegner's writing. It's as real as it gets considering it's just words on a piece of paper. But those beautiful words leap right off the page.

There are thirty-one stories in this book of which the author says came from his life. However, it's not an autobiography. He says he can't be trusted to write his biography. To quote, "I can't control my impulse to rearrange, suppress, add, heighten, invent, and improve." The result of all that creativity is some of the finest writing you'll ever come across. And that's not just my opinion. It's the opinion of those nice folks who gave him the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

Of course, I always have to give a plug for Penguin Classic books. Love their style.

This book is what Literature is all about. I give it five stars.

Stegner's Collection of Stories is all You'll Need

Of all the authors I have read, few evoke such good feelings as Wallace Stegner. It's a shame that he was killed in a car crash in the early 1990s. I think he was just getting warmed up and he certainly had decades of experience yet to share with us. This collection of stories, like his novels, shows the conflicts of the human soul. Stegner liked to write about young boys coming of age in an often thoughtless society (and family). And, as you will learn by reading Jackson Benson's biography of him, Stegner had an autobiographical bent while writing his fiction. The locales of his stories resemble those places where his gambling, drinking father took him and his family in the early 1900s. It seems that Stegner was obsessed with his father, and many of his stories feature a version of him. He and his father had a rather poor relationship and Stegner's writing about him perhaps was his effort at catharsis. My favorite story in this collection is Goin' to Town. The expectations of this poor boy are shot to .... and he is left to endure the boredom of yet another day. Excellent stories, excellent writer.

Stegner is a literary hero

There are 31 stories in this collection, written over a period of about 50 years. Naturally, the subject matter and quality varies. Stegner himself chose the stories for inclusion, as well as their arrangement in the collection. He clearly knew his best writing, because the better stories are in the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the book.

In the Foreword, Stegner says about the stories:
"I lived them, either as a participant or spectator or auditor, before I made fictions of them...and because the world and I were changing at an ever accelerating rate, some stories reflect events, social attitudes, and even diction that now seem dated."
This is what makes the collection worth reading. It covers so many time periods and lifestyles that are forever gone, preserved in literary amber by one who actually lived through those bygone eras.

The stories cover a variety of historical topics: the 1918 influenza epidemic, WWII wives waiting for letters from their soldier husbands, ranching life on the plains of Saskatchewan, and Prohibition days in Salt Lake City. All from someone who was there.

I think the most perfect story in the collection is "Double Corner." It showcases Stegner's talent for creating a powerful sense of place, as well as his ability to express the beautiful and heartbreaking impulses that make us human. If you read no other stories in this book, at least read this one.
"Double Corner" is about a little family of California fruit growers who try to take on the task of caring for the husband's mother rather than placing her in an old folks' home. But the mother has dementia, and all their love and good intentions may not be enough to keep her safe and keep themselves from falling apart. Stegner lets us see how difficult it is for everyone when a loved one is losing mental faculties, and how frightening life becomes for the one with dementia.

Interesting read with practical advice.

This book is a great read if you are looking to find out more about using various psychology techniques to advance your career, better your relationship or in general influence people. I was a psych major in undergrad and I do remember a lot of the principles mentioned in this book. One thing that I did not know a lot about is neuro linguistic programming. I found the chapter on this topic very interesting and in fact, I am going to look for some more books on the topic. The chapter gave me a nice taste of NLP, but now I want more. One last thing I enjoyed about this book is that it gives very practical tips and techniques you can implement starting today to influence people you come in contact with on a day to day basis. All in all, good book.

Marvellous art book

[[VIDEOID:mo1KL1OT4EA2U93]]The Art of Last of Us is a wonderful art book to Naughty Dog's latest game. I also have the Uncharted 2 art book and I love that book. I love this one too.

This book is packed with character designs and environment art. The concept art is top notch.

All the characters and infected are drawn out in detail and colour. There are various designs for each character. Lots to see. The infected, if you have not played the game, are not traditional zombies. They have been infected by some deadly fungus that grows and consumes the human body. You get to see some interesting and scary designs that you would not get from typical zombies.

The environment art are painted with astonishing amount of detail that makes everything seem so real. There are the devastated towns, rundown buildings, deserted streets and ransacked rooms. Most scenes depicted will make you wonder what the hell happened there. The level of realism you see here is unmatched even by big budget movie sets.

Spoilers appear in the book either as text or pictures. So definitely play the game first before going through the book. Other than that, there's not much text except the occasional comments on the art and game.

This is a fantastic video game art book. Highly recommended.

Everything you need, perhaps too much?

Don't get me wrong, the art in this game is massive and detailed, and I love reading (and seeing) production sketches, and whatnot, and for the price listed here, a VERY good deal, and companion with the game (which is incredible.)

The only thing is, there ARE spoilers in the book, so either read after the game, or stop when you see something unfamiliar.

That's about it. If you're impressed with the game, this is a very good bargain for your money, and enjoyable.

Just keep in mind : This book is NOT a strategy guide, but it DOES have spoilers.

Lots of great character art expecially the infected part

The Art of The Last of Us by Dark Horse Books is a must for any Last of Us fan. The book is 176 pages and they load the pages with art so there's little wasted space. With this book you will get many variations of the characters and environments. Although with the characters I found that almost every single one is a frontal pose of a character with variations in clothing, the face, or something like that. This is not bad since their are a lot of them and they cover a lot of characters but I wish there were more angles and such, but none the less its still amazing.

The Book is divided into 7 chapters.
1. The Introduction is 2 pages and just talks about the creators making the game and stuff.
2. Joel and Ellie is 16 pages and has lots of different poses and variations of the two. There is commentary by the artists about what went through their minds when making the sketches and such which really lets you understand what they were thinking when they made the characters. Also they have pictures of how they were going to have Ellie look but switched to how she actually does look so that was cool to see how they first wanted her to look.
3.The Journey is 93 pages and has sketches and pictures of a bunch of characters and scenes that you encounter throughout the game. There's soldiers, thugs, some of the other main characters, and plenty of abandoned house and buildings. Their is lots of content here and the pages are jam packed. The concept art of the environments are really detailed and have excellent lighting.
4. The Infected is 29 pages and has lots of the different infected monsters. The pictures put you up close and personal to the infected and lets you see all the grossest features. From the bumps, blood, scars, and everything else they made sure to show just how ugly/scary the infected are. This chapter was really cool to look at and highly detailed.
5. The World is 6 pages and has really nothing to it except some signs and weapons which were not really all that great or detailed. There's bows, garden tools, guns, and pieces of metal for the weapons shown.
6. Marketing is 14 pages and has the art they used to promote the game and its basically just some concept art like what they have on the cover of the game and such.
7. The American Dream is 5 pages and is art from the comic book so if you like comic books you might enjoy this section since its just simple drawings comic book style.

Overall this book is a must for any fan of the game. It has lots of character variations and artist comments which really help you know just what went through their minds when making the characters and such. The environmental art is awesome and highly detailed with excellent lighting and color. The scenes show everything from old farms, run down cities, or even the quarantine zone. The infected look gruesome and lifelike and its really gross the amount of detail they put in some of the pictures, but that is what makes this book so good. Finally if your looking for some good character art this book has loads of it and although its mostly all frontal view it still is quite nice to look at and has many variations and characters. I highly recommend this art book and found it to be one of the better game art books.
